Exotic Shorthair
Exotic Shorthair cats are affectionately known as the “Lazy Man’s Persian” because they share the Persian’s adorable flat-faced appearance but have a short, plush coat that is much easier to maintain. These calm, affectionate, and cuddly cats make wonderful indoor companions thanks to their gentle personalities and low-maintenance grooming needs.
Physical Appearance
-
Compact Build:
Exotic Shorthairs are medium-sized, stocky cats with broad chests, sturdy legs, and a muscular body. Males typically weigh between 8–15 lbs (3.6–6.8 kg). -
Distinct Facial Features:
They have broad, rounded heads, large expressive eyes set wide apart, and a short snub nose that gives them a sweet, sometimes grumpy-looking expression. -
Plush Coat:
Their dense, soft, teddy bear-like coat is short and luxurious, requiring brushing only once or twice a week to keep it looking healthy.
Personality & Temperament
-
Calm & Affectionate:
Exotic Shorthairs inherit the Persian’s gentle, loving personality and enjoy spending time relaxing with their families. -
Playful Yet Relaxed:
They combine the calm loyalty of the Persian with the playful curiosity of the American Shorthair, creating a well-balanced temperament. -
Family Friendly:
They adapt well to homes with children and other pets and are content entertaining themselves while their owners are away.
Health & Care
-
Easy Grooming:
Their short coat only requires weekly brushing to remove loose hair and maintain its soft, plush texture. -
Health Considerations:
Because of their flat facial structure, Exotic Shorthairs may be prone to Brachycephalic Respiratory Syndrome, excessive tear staining around the eyes, and obesity due to their relaxed lifestyle. -
Routine Care:
Regular eye cleaning, a balanced diet, routine exercise, and periodic veterinary checkups help keep them healthy and comfortable throughout their lives.
