Cornish Rex
Cornish Rex cats are distinctive, slender felines often known as the “Greyhounds of the Cat World” because of their elegant, athletic bodies and graceful movements. They are recognized for their oversized bat-like ears, highly arched backs, egg-shaped heads, and incredibly soft, rippled coats that feel like silk or crushed velvet.
Key Characteristics
-
Unique Curly Coat:
Unlike most cats, Cornish Rex cats lack guard hairs and have only a soft undercoat of down hair that forms tight, rippling curls known as a “Marcel Wave.” Their curly coat extends even to their whiskers and gives them a luxurious velvet-like texture. -
Athletic & Elegant Build:
They have long legs, narrow waists, deep chests, and a naturally curved back. Although they appear delicate, they are muscular, strong, and capable of impressive jumps and athletic movements. -
Low Shedding Coat:
Their single-layer coat produces very little shedding and may result in less dander compared to some breeds. However, they are not completely hypoallergenic. -
Temperature Sensitivity:
Because they lack a thick protective topcoat, Cornish Rex cats lose body heat more easily and are sensitive to cold temperatures.
Personality & Temperament
-
Energetic & Playful:
Cornish Rex cats are highly active, curious, and playful. They enjoy climbing, running, and interactive games throughout the day. -
Puppy-Like Personality:
They are extremely affectionate and often follow their owners from room to room, enjoying attention and companionship. -
Affectionate Lap Cats:
Despite their high energy, they love cuddling and often seek warmth by curling up with their favorite people.
Health & Care
-
Warmth Needs:
Due to their thin coat, Cornish Rex cats often seek warm places such as sunny windows, heated beds, blankets, or their owner’s lap. -
Diet & Metabolism:
Their active lifestyle and higher metabolic rate require a high-quality, protein-rich diet to maintain energy levels without overfeeding. -
Lifespan:
With proper nutrition, regular veterinary care, and attentive ownership, Cornish Rex cats typically live between 11–20 years.
